Adaptation is the process by which a culture's values, norms, and attitudes are changed in order to produce a society which is qualitatively different from the existing culture of the time. The history of mankind is an example of the process of adaptation. It is an instance when one society changes to fit the needs and desires of another. The history of several societies clearly shows the process of adaptation. These societies successfully adapt to changing conditions. In fact, they have built their social organization on the basis of their success in adaptation.
It is evident that people differ in their aptitudes and abilities. Everybody has got a set of strengths and weaknesses. There are cultural differences too. These differences are a reason why some communities succeed while the others fail. The strength of the different community can be seen from the degree of education and skill level possessed by the members of the same community.
People in different groups of cultures adopt different values. This adoption of values helps the individuals belonging to that community to differentiate themselves from the people in other communities. They tend to look down upon the people of other communities as backward. This separation of culture and community leads to the division of the society into different classes.
Rivalry is a typical feature of society. It is the basic cause for the differentiation between the members of the same race. There are many instances where individuals with the same race but of different descent have interbred and given rise to a distinct type of individual. This feature of the society further leads to the process of adapting borrowed cultural traits.
Different societies have developed different types of norms and values. It is the role of the intelligent society that try to understand the nature of culture differences, analyze the impact of the norms and values against each other, and then attempt to make changes so as to adapt to prevailing culture differences. However, it is also the role of individuals within that community to try and understand their own cultural identity and adapt the values that they have accepted.
When an individual learns foreign languages, he or she becomes part of a multicultural society. The term multicultural can be applied in two different ways – one may refer to the existence of different cultures existing side by side and the other may refer to the existence of various cultures in a country or area having distinct areas. Different societies tend to accept and adapt to different kinds of social norms. The process of adapting borrowed cultural traits can be understood through this simple example.
