The economic structure of South Korea is based on capitalism. Unlike most Asian countries with a freer market, the South Korean economy is tightly regulated. This means that private enterprise is highly regulated, giving way to a highly protected and guarded competitive environment. This protection ensures the continued success of the South Korean economy and ensures that life quality is guaranteed. In fact, there are currently no banks in South Korea, all transactions are made through the state.
A strong economy is essential to maintaining a stable government. The legal system of this country is also highly complicated, which means that it takes a lot of time to process and complete. The time taken to approve and make business transactions is equivalent to about five to seven years. To prevent friction between the government and private industry, it is highly unlikely that a foreign company will start up its operations in South Korea without consulting the authorities.
Although South Korea has one of the strongest currencies in the world, its currency is not completely recognized internationally. The only currency that fully recognizes the country is the South Korean won, which is represented by the South Korean won (Seoul) or the South Korean currency (known as the Won)
In addition, unlike many other nations in the world, the South Korean currency is rarely convertible into other currencies. For example, if you are from Japan and wish to buy South Korean products, then you would need to convert your money into South Korean won before being able to purchase goods. Similarly, if you wish to exchange your U.S. dollars for South Korean won, you would have to do this at the bank. This is known as cross-currency trading. In order to facilitate such transactions, the United States dollar and the South Korean won are usually considered to be interchangeable.
Another significant factor that makes South Korea a preferred offshore investment destination is its location between the east and the west. This allows investors and businessmen, the ability to have their assets managed and sheltered from different elements in the country. There are very few instances when the communist government has to take over another firm and close down its operations. Also, most of the companies listed on the Korean stock market are owned by foreigners and therefore, there are no restrictions on them doing business inside the country. This provides investors with an opportunity to purchase shares in leading companies and make a handsome profit when the market turns up positive.
Still on the positive side, the country has one of the strongest economic growths in all of the world. It has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world and has gradually closed the gap with neighboring Japan. Additionally, it is home to the six nations which form the Five Eastern Nations, whose products are widely recognized throughout the world. Therefore, if you are planning to invest in South Korea, then you are making a wise decision in terms of its economy and potential for development.
