One of my favorite books is by Dr. Henry Kissinger, former Secretary of State. In Power, Kissinger said that economic growth and the environment must be balanced. I completely agree and have read it several times. The economic growth and the environment must be in constant balance. This is why we have the environmental agencies that protect our air, water, land, wildlife and the like.
But, economic growth and the environment cannot be done away with as one is always in conflict with another. For example, pollution is bad for the atmosphere but good for economic growth. Therefore, one cannot say that economic growth is bad for the environment and the other is good for the economy. It's not possible to do one without the other.
Still, some would say that economic growth and the environment are one and the same. If one promotes economic growth then he is also promoting the environment. They go hand in hand. We need the infrastructure of the world to be up to par. But, if we destroy the environment while trying to build these economic blocks, then we are no better than the terrorists who want to blow us up.
Just as a nation which wants economic growth and the environment for its citizens can take action to stop this terrorism. So, can a nation which is in violation of the environment do something to correct it? Yes, it is possible. There are many environmental agencies that will speak out on this. Once they do, perhaps nations and the world will see that economic growth and the environment do not mix and therefore such action should be taken.
Some would say that one cannot do anything to stop climate change or to save the world. Indeed, I completely agree, but one could take certain actions to prevent or reverse this current trend. By taking these steps, one could indeed achieve both economic growth and the preservation of the environment. That may not seem possible, but it is entirely possible. And, if it is possible, that would be one less thing that we as a people would have to worry about during our days, nights and years.
One may conclude that economic growth and the environment do not mix well together, but that is not true. Rather, they make for an excellent teaming proposition. Perhaps you might like to work on this team in your own business. Think on this.
